Why is my son hitting so many pop ups in youth baseball instead of line drives?

Don't confuse launch angle with drop, lock, and lift—when hands drop down, lock the lead arm, and lift up through the ball, you create an upward angle from below, hitting the bottom half for topspin, weak pop flies, and no carry. Keep hands above the strike zone and swing down into the ball to produce backspin for better carry, more power, and consistent line drives.

  • Dropping hands + lifting creates topspin and pop ups that die quick

  • Hands high + downward attack angle hits the center/lower half for backspin and line drives

  • Backspin supports distance and carry—focus on this for youth hitters
